PORTALBERITA.CO.ID - Automotive manufacturer SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) has clarified the crucial dependency regarding its potential utilization of Indonesia's abundant nickel reserves. The final decision rests squarely on the readiness and comprehensive discussions held with their designated electric vehicle battery production partners.

This coordination phase is deemed absolutely critical for the company's forward strategy. As reported by BOGORPLUS.ID, the majority of contemporary electric vehicle manufacturers currently rely on securing battery supplies from established third-party entities rather than fully internalizing production.

Currently, Wuling maintains a localized manufacturing capability for battery packs within Indonesia. This operation is situated at the supplier park in Cikarang, West Java, representing an investment of 40 million RMB, equivalent to approximately Rp 87 billion, channeled through PT SGMW Motor Indonesia.

The technology currently being implemented by Wuling in these localized battery packs is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP). This specific chemistry is notable because, by its design, it does not require the inclusion of nickel within its core composition.

Han Dehong, the Vice President of SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), elaborated on the conditions that will ultimately drive the adoption of Indonesian nickel. His perspective centers on the broader industrial framework supporting the supply chain.

"According to Han Dehong, 'I think it depends on the ecosystem. We need to ask our ecosystem partners to build the industry first,'" the executive stated when providing commentary on the potential future incorporation of locally sourced nickel.

This statement underscores that Wuling's move towards nickel-based batteries is contingent upon its external partners establishing the necessary infrastructure and supply chains within Indonesia first. This external development must precede any internal commitment to utilize the local commodity.

The strategic alignment with battery manufacturers is therefore the primary determinant of when, or if, Wuling integrates Indonesian nickel into its production lines. This highlights the complex, interconnected nature of the burgeoning EV battery sector.
