Recent retail sales data clearly indicates a substantial erosion of popularity for traditional sedans among domestic consumers in the archipelago.
This dramatic shift in consumer preference signals a major upheaval in the nation's car-buying habits over recent years. The trend suggests that buyers are increasingly favoring other vehicle types, pushing sedans to the periphery of the mass market.
As reported by Detik Oto, the market dynamics for sedans have experienced extreme fluctuations over the last five years. This period encompasses early recovery phases followed by the current, surprisingly sharp downturn in sales volume.
According to data compiled by the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), the shipment volume for sedan units was recorded at a relatively low 5,359 units in the year 2021. This figure serves as a baseline for understanding the segment's recent performance.
The following year, 2022, showed a minor rebound in the segment's performance, with deliveries inching up to 8,206 units. This slight increase, however, masks the severe contraction that has since taken hold of the market.
The core issue centers on the "What" of the decline: official figures show that sales have plummeted by more than 50 percent when comparing the most recent annual data to prior figures, highlighting the severity of the crisis.
