As reported by The Guardian, the debut trailer confirms the film explores the continued saga surrounding Mark Zuckerberg and the social media giant, Facebook.
This new feature is explicitly positioned not as a direct sequel to the acclaimed 2010 film, but as a distinct narrative revisiting the platform's internal controversies. The story draws its foundation from "The Facebook Files," an investigative series in The Wall Street Journal that detailed internal damage and concealed company findings.
The casting sees Succession lead Jeremy Strong stepping into the role of Mark Zuckerberg, a character previously earning Jesse Eisenberg an Oscar nomination. Strong, himself an Oscar nominee for his work in The Apprentice, previously expressed high praise for the script's relevance to contemporary issues.
"It’s one of the great scripts I’ve ever read," Strong said last year. "It speaks to our time, it touches the third rail of everything happening in our world," Strong stated.
The newly released footage reportedly centers on Strong’s character preparing for intense congressional testimony following a significant leak of confidential internal documents by a whistleblower. During the trailer, the character articulates a firm stance regarding his leadership and principles.
"I’m not two years out of a dorm room any more," he says in the clip, further identifying himself as a "free speech absolutist."
When questioned about consulting with Jesse Eisenberg regarding the portrayal, Strong indicated that the prior performance would not influence his approach to inhabiting the role.
Oscar winner Mikey Madison, who recently secured the Best Actress Academy Award for Anora, takes on the pivotal role of whistleblower Frances Haugen. Her character is shown highlighting the significant power disparity faced by those challenging the corporation.
"I don’t want to be made an example of by a guy with unlimited resources," the character states in the trailer footage.
